Here at Alexander Muss High School in Israel we have the opportunity to be in an outside visual classroom. Being surrounded by nature while learning is new and exciting. Being present in the setting outside of the standardize classroom helps you retain more information. During the weeks we take mini trips offside our campus all around Israel. Having the opportunity to not only learn outside but to travel and visually see what we are being taught. Since I’ve been to Israel I went many new places, here for example is Masada. First we hiked all the way to the top and learned all about king Herod and how he built his palaces from absolutely nothing. This was so much more entertaining than learning out of a book. Some of the differences when being outside rather than a classroom is actually being able to view the sites rather than just reading about them, physically being able to hike and be surrounded by the beautiful culture and nature and most of all you are being guided and informed on everything you walk past. Although there are many differences, here are still some similarities: you always have to be prepared and you also have to focus and pay close attention to the teacher at all times. Being in Israel has made me feel a connection, owing to the fact that I have had the chance to travel around to many new places and visit many sites our ancestors once walked. Another positive factor of having Israel as an outdoor classroom is how alive and awake it makes you feel compared to sitting in a confined school with absolutely no visual representations of what you’re learning about. One of the most important benefits of Israel being our classroom is the amount of exercise we get, we are all constantly going on hikes, long walks or climbing in caves. This keeps us in shape and feeling healthy while we learn. Learning outside especially in Israel has completely changed my outlook on learning, and now I love it!
