Balancing History with Modernity

We are now well into this month of holidays and deeply engaged in our studies of Jewish history, Israeli society, and security.
We began the week on campus, learning about the story of Jesus and his students within the broader context of Jewish history. At the same time, we continued our explorations into Israeli society, reflecting on the balance—and sometimes tension—between Jewish tradition (alongside Muslim and Christian traditions) and modern liberal rights and freedoms within Israeli law.
On Tuesday, we set out to the Judean Hills, where we explored the ruins and ancient underground tunnel systems of Jewish villages dating back to the Bar Kochba Revolt against the Roman Empire. The experience sparked meaningful conversations about the role of education and ideals in preserving the Jewish people throughout history—and the courage of our ancestors who risked danger and persecution to uphold their values and way of life.
On Wednesday, we are traveling to Jerusalem to prepare for a meaningful and uplifting Yom Kippur. Students will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of synagogues and communities in which to pray throughout the holiday, before we all come together for the final Ne’ilah service at the Kotel.
Following Yom Kippur, our journey continues south to Be’er Sheva. On Friday, we will head into the desert to visit the town of Arad before returning for a peaceful Shabbat on campus—an opportunity to rejuvenate and prepare for the week ahead.
May this Yom Kippur bring peace, love, forgiveness, and joy to us all.
