A Meaningful Start

Hear from Justen, 16, about transformative moments connecting with Israel’s land, history, and people during the April Mini-Mester at Muss this week.

This week has been deeply meaningful. We’ve had a chance to connect with both the land and its people in a powerful way—from spending a short time working on a local farm (which reminded me a bit of Alaska with all the manual labor) to walking the streets of Jerusalem and learning more about the country’s layered history.

One of the most impactful moments so far was attending a Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day) ceremony here for fallen Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers and victims of terror. The service lasted several hours and was incredibly moving. It really underscored the weight and personal cost of service and conflict—something that resonates especially strongly as we reflect on Memorial Day in the U.S. as well. We’ve also been hearing first hand stories related to the Israel-Palestine conflict, which has added a deeply human element to what we’ve learned academically.

Aside from that, we’ve been exploring Tel Aviv, meeting a lot of kind and welcoming people, and enjoying the vibrant energy of the country. From markets and beaches to meaningful conversations, it’s been a whirlwind—but in the best way. Our group dynamic is great, and the leaders here have been supportive and engaging.

Wishing you all a meaningful Memorial Day. I am so grateful for the chance to be here and gain this new perspective.
