Israel: Spiritual and Educational

As the first month of the program comes to a close I have started to really observe the benefits of using the land of Israel as a living classroom. School in Israel includes everything that I would find in school at home. From note taking, to quizzes, to really hard unit tests that force us to use all the knowledge we have learned in our classes. But in our Israeli studies class, we take it a step further, and get to explore the ruins and spiritual sites to compliment what we learn in class.
One of the best examples of this I can think of is our two day tiyul to Jerusalem and Masada. Previously In class, however, we discussed the different sects of Jews nearing the end of the second temple period of ancient Judea; and life in Jerusalem under Roman rule. All the background knowledge became an amazing guide for me on the tiyul following class. When I saw the model of old Jerusalem at the Israel Museum I understood where all the sects lived and how the city was divided. When we went to the southern wall excavations I saw the change from the glorious second temple in the model to the ruined wall that symbolized destruction. Listening to the story on the street of the southern wall, I was able to imagine all of it. The shops, the trumpet, and people lining up to sacrifice to G-d. I finished that day with a quick prayer at the Kotel and got ready for the upcoming day.
At the base of Masada I felt I was in a rush to get to the top before the sun rose, which may have been what the Zealots felt as they fled the Roman siege of Jerusalem. After climbing up with my friends and experiencing a beautiful sunrise, we had a lesson about Masada. For me it was very spiritual to see the final stand of Jewish self sovereignty for two thousand. And the lesson from the classroom also helped me understand a lot of details in the fortress along with the outdoor lesson. It all ended with the words "Masada will not fall again," which really got me to think about my connection with the land and love it even more.
Having Israel as a living classroom is truly amazing. It has taught me more than I ever learn in other classes and deepened my spiritual connection. I can't wait for another 3 months!
