On the second week of this amazing trip, we hiked Masada and swam in the Dead Sea. Before I even left the United States, I knew that this day would be absolutely unbelievable. The trip began at four o’clock in the morning. Everyone was half asleep and half awake but we were all still so excited to embark on our hike up Masada. We did not hike as separate classes, we moved as one unit. Everyone was helping each other, whether they knew them or not. Someone I didn’t even know stopped to tie my hiking boots half way up the mountain when I didn’t even notice they had come undone. The hike was difficult and it was pitch black outside. About an hour later, we made it to the top. The sun was just beginning to rise. All my friends and I stood on top of tower and watched the sun come above the horizon. We sat in complete silence just admiring the breathtaking view. It truly brought us closer, just sitting there, looking off the edge of a mountain. After, one of our teachers led us in some prayer. It was just a morning prayer but it had so much significance. We were praying exactly where our ancestors stood. I felt such a connection with my Judaism and my heritage. For the next couple hours, we stayed on top of the mountain and learned its history and what role it played in our heritage. We then took the tram down and headed for the Dead Sea. Once I stepped into the water I was immediately shocked. The water was so warm! I also found two cuts on my leg I knew nothing about. It was a little painful but overall was so amazing. I went to lay on my back and my entire body lifted out of the water. It was incredible. My mother and father told me stories of when they went into the Dead Sea and they were 100% correct (even about the cuts). It made me think of them and how fortunate I am for having them. Believe it or not, the Dead Sea reminded me of home and how amazing my family truly is. I came back to campus exhausted. But I also came back with richer relationships with my friends, even more friends than I had before, and more gratitude for my family back at home.
