It gives a new meaning to the lessons being taught...

Reaching the halfway mark in HSI has really made me realize just how quickly this program moves. I genuinely remember the way I felt on the first day as if it was yesterday and I'm shocked at just how much I've changed since then. In class, we have finally moved on to the segment that focuses on Judaism and Zionism within the past 1,500 years. Personally I feel that these are the most interesting lessons we can learn being that they are so relevant to us and the way we practice Judaism. Not only have we begun to transition into modern Judaism, but the topic of Zionism has come into discussion. With these big topics in mind we have had many significant trips within the past week and a half. Now more than ever I feel that I am physically seeing not only the remnants of the history that we're learning, but I'm also seeing how they continue to develop and incorporate themselves into the modern world. This is so interesting to me as I get to learn about the beginnings of Israeli society while being able to physically see the kibbutzim that are still functioning today. I know that I am so lucky to be able to be learning about my culture in such an interactive way. This is the first time that I have ever been taught in such a manner that I actually feel connected to the causes and effects of my history. The ability to be able to use Israel as my outdoor classroom is so unique as I feel that it is one of the few countries where it's possible to do so. It gives a new meaning to the lessons being taught as we get to fully experience their value and importance in society. It also brings a new understanding as now we are able to truly see the impact with our own eyes.
