HSI was not what I expected in the slightest, and changed me in ways I never would have imagined. But the surprises and challenges the trip brought me have altered my outlook on life forever. I am so thankful I got to achieve and create goals with such amazing people in such a special place. The past two months in Israel have carved a home in my heart. Israel will always be the place I can feel united, connected to my roots, and at home. .

At this point, I’m sitting on my bottom bunk bed trying to reflect on the past 7 weeks. Initially, I saw the date at the top right of my computer screen and blinked twice before coming to the ultimate conclusion that I have way too much laundry that may or may not fit in my suitcase. Then, the daunting coldness circulated through my spine and I flashed back to the person I was just a short 7 weeks ago. This person looked unfamiliar to me… but how and why?

Early on in the trip, the goals I set for myself seemed too huge for such a small amount of time. Finding how I connect to Israel and identifying where I stand in terms of my Jewish identity are two lifelong goals that I believe I will be achieving everyday more and more. Yet this journey, that will be coming to an end in a short 8 days, has allowed me to discover more about myself than I could’ve imagined. I realized that I am Jewish because of what Judaism represents. Wanting to fix the world in the best ways that I can, acknowledging the strength of unity, being proud of the struggles and strength the Jewish people live with, and always having hope-- this is why I am a Jew.  I realize now that my place on earth is to explore, to learn, and to change what’s wrong in my eyes. Hopefully throughout my future I can continue to express my Jewish identity in all aspects life, and the goals I’ve achieved at AMHSI will continue to influence my journey.
