Israel and its nature has made such an impact on how I will remember this learning experience.

Learning in Israel surrounded by nature has been the most effective and interactive way that I have ever been taught information. At home, sitting in a classroom for a total of six hours can be extremely boring and I tend to lose my focus, but learning outside creates a very engaging environment. Recently we learned some of the most difficult information we will have discussed in this eight-week period, and I cannot imagine retaining any of it if I had to learn inside. The tiyuls have really allowed me to grasp the concepts and history while actively participating and being attentive, especially on our longest day, the trip to Masada.

During this tiyul, we woke up very early, at 4 AM, so you can probably imagine how difficult it was or would have been to learn information and be active for many hours in a row. But, Masada was one of my favorite and most memorable experiences. I did not think of this trip as a requirement and information that I had to learn; I was actually very intrigued by the history of this site and enjoyed listening to what my Core teacher, Jacob, had to say. Because I could actually visualize what we were being taught, I could understand what was being said and I formed a mental picture of the events that occurred on this site. If I had to sit in a classroom for the same amount of time and learn the exact same information, I guarantee that I would have lost interest or focus. Having Israel as our outdoor classroom is extremely effective and it is honestly so much more beneficial for us in the long run - it is much easier to remember an event when it has a direct impact on me, which Masada did. As we were learning, I could truly picture the Zealots meeting late in the night discussing how they will proceed with the devastating intrusion of the Romans ahead of them. I could imagine the Jews using the mikvahs, walking around, and sitting in the Beit Knesset.

Masada is just one example, but Israel and its nature has made such an impact on how I will remember this learning experience. I am so glad to have this opportunity and I am so grateful that everyone at Muss takes advantage of the scenery and historical places so I can make this journey an unforgettable one!
