To me a living classroom is being outdoors while studying. But it is not just about stepping foot out of the physical classroom it’s about going to unique and significant locations. At these location you open your eyes and learn with a different perspective and view. In the classroom, we stare at the the white board for hours but in the outdoor and living classroom we view nature and its beauty. The outdoor living classroom involves talking about how geography impacts our history as a nation, religion, and as a society. But the outdoor class room has much more to offer then what is seen. The outdoor classroom gives you a new perspective on your learning. The outdoor classroom allows you feel part of history. You can feel the rocks that people may have stood on. You can admire the nature and setting of history. You are able to smell and experience life which is much different than the average picture. The outdoor living classroom is a whole new experience which can only be described as amazing. An individual does not realize how impactful it is to stand on mountain and learn and read about what happened in that exact same place. This experience in a way made me feel confused and overwhelmed at first. As I felt that there is no way that history happened where I am standing. There is no way that people marked this trail or path hundred of years ago. Just last week we walked through the water tunnels in Jerusalem. This was very similar to a living classroom because before and after the walk we discussed why the tunnels were built, when and by who. It was so powerful to walk through the tunnels and think about the history going on and the stories that we are told. The living classroom sets up a place for discovery. While walking through Tel Gezer my teacher discovered a peace of ancient pottery. This discovery could not be done in the classroom as we could not be hands on. The living classroom is rare, not everyday are we able to experience life outside of the classroom. And it truly provides for a new view on life. Being at Alexander Muss High School in Israel and enjoying the living classroom has been the best experience. In regular school we learn all day in front of a teacher while sitting down in the same desk for hours but at Muss I’ve learned by living not by sitting.
