A Student's Guide to Life in Israel Checklist

One of the biggest transformations I have been through so far is becoming one with the culture. I’m not a tourist, I’m a student living here, going grocery shopping. I still have tests to think about and study for. To show other the “wisdom” (haha not really) I have acquired, I compiled a list of the best tips for living and being a student in Israel:
1. Learn to love hummus if you don’t already
2. Looking Israeli will make you feel like a native (buy Tevas/Blundstones and elephant pants).
3. Study with friends for the core finals— so much more enjoyable!
4. Use breaks during the day to complete homework so you can relax at night.
5. Shower everyday—your roommates will thank you.
6. Decorate your room with banners and artwork. It will create a comfortable space to call home.
7. Winter: bring so many hoodies. Then bring more.
8. Try new drinks that look funny, you might surprise yourself!
9. Cool warm kids wear fuzzy socks and that’s a fact.
10. Talk to friends back in America to see if you’re on track with classes.
11. Bring a BIG water bottle.
12. Pack some Advil and cough drops.
13. Trust me, you don’t need heels.
14. Call/text your teachers if there’s something up.
15. Take pictures, but not too many; enough to remember the good times.
16. If you’re the organized type, bring colorful pens to beatify your notebook.
17. Don’t spend too much money on food (make Offer’s a weekly purchase).
18. Become friends with the Australians and Mosenson kids around you. This is a great way to branch out and learn from others.
19. Become friends with Ronit, the lab teacher, because she’s awesome.
20. Acknowledge the cats, don’t judge the cats.
21. Go away on open Shabbats, even if you don’t really know the family, because it’s an adventure (my personal philosophy is to embrace adventure).
22. If you get lost, chill, then call your counselors.
23. Journal to never forget the highlights.
24. Show gratitude for this journey of a lifetime.
Peace,
Talia
