I know I have been in Israel for over a month but this was the first time I felt like I was truly here.

A lot has happened over this past week as it was the first time we were able to leave campus since the start of lockdown. Of course the excitement and energy was high as we were all ready to see Israel. While I had been having a lot of fun on campus with everyone I also was ready to leave and explore. I can only imagine how difficult it was to pull this trip off but I’m so grateful I got to go.

We went to the Golan Heights and spent two nights at a nice campsite. During the day we volunteered to do farm work to help out farmers who didn’t have enough workers during Covid. To be honest, I was not too excited to go farming because it was hot and I’d never done it before so I thought it would be really difficult. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up enjoying it. When we first left campus we went straight to an avocado field where we helped weed the rows of avocado trees. While it was difficult and draining work it made me feel good to help others. Helping out others and doing this work was probably my most meaningful experience I’ve had here. Throughout the entire program I have encountered experiences that felt meaningful but this one stood out because instead of just thinking about myself I was actually doing stuff for other people. I know I have been in Israel for over a month but this was the first time I felt like I was truly here. Being surrounded by everybody and getting to work together to help out others wasn’t only the most meaningful experience I’ve had here in Israel, but maybe one of the most in my lifetime.
