Through the Israel studies course I have already learned things about Israel and Judaism that I never would’ve known if I hadn’t come on this program.
Having just come to Alexander Muss High School in Israel I have lots of goals, this is especially because quarantine has given me time to think and build up my excitement, not to mention it is my first time in Israel.
My obvious goals would be visiting certain places or trying certain delicious foods like real Israeli falafel and hummus but underneath that I find myself excited to connect with my Judaism. If I’m being honest, I’ve never truly felt a deep connection with my Judaism. I grew up in a reformed family with only a few close Jewish friends. While I did have a Bat Mitzvah, and it was amazing, that may have been the only real Jewish experience I’ve had so far. Hearing about this program and the experiences so many other kids my age have had, made me excited to learn more about my Jewish identity. Already being in Israel (even though I’m stuck in quarantine) I’ve been exposed to so many other Jewish kids my age with different beliefs and practices about the religion.
Being surrounded by other Jews has made me realize how interconnected we all are and has sparked an interest and passion to learn more and discover more about my own personal Jewish identity. I know that this program will offer me that experience. Through the Israel studies course I have already learned things about Israel and Judaism that I never would’ve known if I hadn’t come on this program. Hearing about all the trips or Tiyulim we will embark on after quarantine is just proving that this will be an unforgettable adventure. I know I will be part of the experience of a lifetime. I’m ready to see what Israel has to offer and make some incredible memories!
